Suspension    Domes

Bridge equivalence

Broadly speaking there's a close correspondence between the technology used for producing bridges and technology used for producing domes.

There are a few things that can be done in three dimensions that don't really have any two dimensional equivalent - so the parallel is not perfect - but in most cases the same sort of strategy works in both cases.

Here are some diagrams showing sections through domes, with captions illustrating the corresponding bridge type:

Arch dome

Cable stayed dome

Suspension dome

Cantilever dome

Truss dome

Hanging dome

Stabilised hanging dome

Notes

Note that there's no "bridge equivalent" of an air-supported dome.
